CANADIAN CREATIONS
Explore the best Canadian bred and selected peonies! Though a number of spectacular Canadian cultivars exist, they are still underrepresented and rarely grown in Canadian home and botanical gardens. As a Canadian participating in hybridizing activities, it is of huge importance to me and a mission of the garden to raise awareness of and to promote the growth of fine Canadian cultivars.
Look out for Etched Salmon, Prosperity Maud, Le Cratère,
John's Dream, Soft Salmon Saucer, Adrienne Clarkson, Ivory White Saucer, and Colonel Owen Cousins.
SAUNDERS MASTERPIECES
Dr. A. P. Saunders is a Canadian-born American who is widely regarded as the most influential peony hybridizer. Known as the Father of the Modern Peony, Saunders forever changed the world of peonies with his revolutionary and systematic hybridizing program. His cultivars remain sought out by collectors to this day and exude a simple, refined elegance - something you have to see in person to understand. I am grateful and proud to be able to share these plants with you, some of which are rare and difficult to find, and encourage you to pay close attention to them and seek them out to grow in your space
Look out for Ballerina, Tranquil Dove, Blushing Princess, May Lilac, Lavender, Magnolia Flower, Lovely Rose, Firelight, Janice, Contance Spry, Nosegay, and Lady Gay.
BREATHTAKING NEW HYBRIDS
Prairie Peonies is very much an experimental garden at heart, with a strong sense of curiosity and a desire to grow something interesting and unique being the driving force behind cultivar selection. These recently introduced hybrids are sure to stir the soul, set your imaginations ablaze, and challenge what you thought peonies were capable of. It has been an enjoyable challenge to be make these peonies, which may be beyond the reach of the casual gardener, available for viewing.
Look out for Pastelegance, Kayleigh Ann, Nelda's Joy, Lois' Choice, Pastelorama, Europa, Appleton House, Kim Sue, Patricia Jean, New Dimension, Romantic Dreamer, Little Corporal, Sky Dance, Solara, and many more.
ITOH INSPIRATION
Itoh peonies are the most recently hybridized peony group, and these new kids on the block boast phenomenal landscape qualities with strong, rigid stems that hold the flowers skyward; deep green, disease resistant foliage; great vigor; and a long bloom period. The Itoh flowers are quite the chameleons, with colours that are ever shifting and constantly in flux, and the result is a plant that looks different every day if not every few hours. Itohs were the subjects of my first peony fascination, and as a result I have a amassed a sizable collection of mature, showy plants that are calling out to be viewed!
Look out for Impossible Dream, New Millennium, Bartzella, First Arrival, Strawberry Crème Brûlée, Magical Mystery Tour, Love Affair, and Yellow Doodle Dandy
LACTIFLORA LANE
Lactifloras are the most commonly grown peony group and there is a good chance that if you have grown peonies, you have indeed grown them; these are the peonies that are inherited with houses and passed down through generations, and that reside on abandoned farm lots. They are the flowers of nostalgia, and the decadence of the voluptuous, blousy doubles and the charm of carefree singles are timeless and undeniable. While several cultivars on the property have the old fashioned charm associated with French-bred peonies of the late 1800s, there are some mold breakers that will surprise you with their curious and novel forms, patterns, and colours, and with their sturdy stem strength which is not often associated with the lactiflora group.
Look out for Do Tell, Green Lotus, Mrs. FDR, Nice Gal, Pieterje Vriend Wagenaar, Myrtle Gentry, Circus Circus, Candy Stripe, and Zhemchuzhna Rossyp.
